Calculate →Three tools — including a body fat calculator — that determine different values and are often confused with one another. The first assesses whether your weight falls within a normal range; the second determines the proportion of fat within that weight; and the third calculates your body’s daily caloric expenditure. Each of these tools answers a question the other two cannot.
The Calculators
- BMI Calculator: relates weight and height based on the standard scale used by health authorities worldwide. It requires two measurements.
- Body Fat Percentage Calculator: uses the “U.S. Navy” method (measuring body circumferences with a tape measure) to determine body composition rather than just total weight.
- TDEE Calculator (Calorie Calculator): determines daily energy expenditure using the Mifflin-St-Jeor formula, commonly used by nutritionists.
BMI or Body Fat Percentage?
BMI is quick but imprecise: it does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass. For example, a highly trained individual might be classified as overweight even if they have very little body fat. Body fat percentage provides direct information about body composition and is therefore more revealing; however, obtaining a reliable measurement requires a tape measure and precise placement.
None of these values constitutes a medical diagnosis. Both simply compare a measurement against the population average, which differs from an assessment of a person’s health status. Medical matters are the domain of a doctor, not a website.
