Everyday calculators

This hub covers six of the calculators people reach for most often — percentage-based questions like discounts and raises, splitting a bill and tip, tracking a GPA, and converting between currencies. None of these tools are complex, but it’s still easy to make small mistakes doing this kind of math in your head.

The Calculators

  • Percentage Calculator: a versatile tool. It allows you to calculate: What is X% of Y? What percentage does X represent relative to Y? What is the percentage change between two numbers?
  • Discount Calculator: determines the actual price after a discount is applied, or the percentage reduction relative to the marked price.
  • Salary Hike Calculator: determines the new salary after a raise, or the percentage of a specific salary increase.
  • Tip Calculator: finds the tip amount and total for a bill, and splits it evenly across any number of people.
  • GPA Calculator: adds up courses and credit hours to find an exact cumulative GPA.
  • Currency Converter: converts between 29 currencies using daily-updated reference exchange rates.

A Common Mistake to Avoid

This one applies to the percentage-based tools above (Percentage, Discount, and Salary Hike): a percentage always refers to a specific base value, and choosing the wrong reference value is the most common error. A 20% decrease followed by a 20% increase does not return the figure to its initial value, because the second percentage is applied to the already reduced amount. If we reduce 100 by 20%, we get 80; if we increase 80 by 20%, we arrive at 96.

People often fall into this same trap when comparing discounts or salary increases. If a percentage calculation seems counterintuitive at first glance, it is usually because the reference value has changed.
